How to Develop Traditional Textiles to Make Them Modern to the Contemporary World through Digital Technology

Abstract

From the Stone Age up to the present digital technology age, humans have created various ways of facing challenges that have been confronting them. Ranging from production of food, finding shelter, and making clothes among others. These were achieved through the help of technology thereby making life a lot easier and meaningful. This paper is an investigation on how the Yoruba batik dye processes can be used to develop and create a contemporary textile through the use of digital technology. The researcher was able to create new ideas or designs of batik influenced by the Adire Tie/Dye Yoruba motifs and symbols on fabrics. Creating motifs is influenced by scenes from land scapes. The usual batik procedure, that is the wax method was firstly employed in making the batik. After which the fabric was scanned into the computer through a scanner, and the designs wear edited in the photo shop computer programme and printed throught the sheeting machine . The research also traces the origin and meaning of batik, meanings of the motifs and symbols used, and how they influenced the life of the people using them.
