Impact of Globalization on Indigenous Culture

Abstract

Indigenous cultures have been negatively impacted by the dominant ideas of progress and development that have created and maintained structures of marginalization and cultural transformation. Globalization has significant influence in every aspects of human life, by importing large scale migration, information and communication technology and multinational corporations numerous cultural practices and traits of Pakhtun has been altered. Direct and indirect diffusion of western cultural features and products in Pakhtun society made possible by the world wide existence of fast foods, the internet, mobile phones, global electronic and print media, latest fashion trends, and Western movies and TV shows. Western norms and values are increasingly transported across the world and becoming the accepted pattern of behavior. Globalization has hit the Pakhtun culture with a great force in many ways, such as it has influenced Pakhto language, Pakhtun dress refashioned, and even food intake timing and dishes. Globalization created tradition alienation in Pakhtuns, the code of Pakhtunwali losing its importance, the customary judicial system Jirga transformed, the distinctive feature of Pakhtun society the Hujra system which is the institute of socialization has disappeared, infused modern traditions, marginalized old traditions, and injected consumerism in the Pakhtun society.
