Fake News and Alternative Truth: Trumpism and Dutertism in the Age of Uncertainty

Abstract

The paper critiques the deployment of President Donald Trump and President Rodrigo Duterte of the tactic of ‘manufacturing consent’ by offering a way to reinvent reality to conform to their way of looking at things and to their definition of public governance. That way, as seen in their pronouncements, reactions, and political posturing, is marked by the recourse to ‘alternative truth’ and to the outright dismissal of what they term as ‘fake news’. In a post-Orwellian world managed by systematic propaganda, the world according to Duterte and Trump is the world of their own making.
