The Functional Left: Bureaucratization, Abdication of Power, and Structural Dependence

Abstract

In this paper, we explore the hypothesis of the influence of the functionalist theory in the practices of the counter hegemonic left and its effects in the workers’ political struggle. We suggest that there would be a kind of defected dynamics in the left, which results in its conversion into a type of automaton: an actor that would play a script of actions, believing it has a function in the organic relationship of the social tensions. Such reflections aim at helping understand the forms of action of the left, which we apprehend as centered in the resistance, in detriment of the debates about the insurgency. We therefore suggest the bond between this functional form, which would assume the left and its tendency, albeit denied, to refrain from the task of thinking how to possibly manage the State, aiming at its extinction. Something would turn out to forge a differentiated national project, confronting the opaque zones of nationalism. In this sense, our research strengthens the theses which point out the dialectic relation between bureaucratization and abdication of power, indicating the need to recover the endogenous character of the international class struggle. To a great extent, we believe that such matters may contribute to explaining the current correlation of forces and the true potential of the Brazilian left. Aspects that help us understand more structural and historical dimensions of the 2016 coup in Brazil, which resulted in the repositioning in the new international division of labor in the country, deepening its dependency.
