Music Enthusiasm Today: Indonesian Jazz Music Platform Era

Abstract

The Indonesian music industry is the largest music market in Southeast Asia, with music enthusiasm still dominated by popular music genres. However, lately emerging phenomenon of jazz in Indonesia is so massive and strong, unexpectedly able to change the pattern of the music industry game and the paradigm about the term jazz music itself. Jazz is commonly known as music subculture, rarely appear in the world of popular music because the development of jazz music in Indonesia was more developed in the small scope at the beginning. The jazz festival in Indonesia is one of the main factors of the birth of the jazz phenomenon. Beginning with tremendous success by the Java Jazz Festival since 2005 and followed by other jazz festivals, it has succeeded in creating its own market circle. Music jazz then goes deeper into the various layers of society to change the paradigm that jazz music is only for middle-upper class enthusiasts, when jazz music is freely admitted (free admission) by society—covering the middle to lower class—in the villages on some jazz festival events. This paper explores the effects of these various musical events for music enthusiasts, jazz music, and music industry. This research is qualitative with ethnography method in order to understand more deeply about how the role of jazz music phenomenon in Indonesia has changed along with jazz development until the emergence of new trends thereafter, and within the scope of ‘spirit of jazz’.
