Unity and Innovation Management: A Values-Based Case Study in Singapore

Abstract

According to the values-based innovation framework, developed by Breuer and Ludeke-Freund, value, a notion of the desirable, is a source, lever, and orientation for innovation management. There are three main dimensions of innovation included in this framework: instrumental, strategic, and normative. This paper uses the framework to analyze the roles that values play in Consulus, which is a Singaporean consulting firm. Based on my review of the Consulus’ documents, interviews with corporate innovation professionals and staff, as well as participant observation, this study demonstrates that ‘unity’ is the core value of Consulus. This value has shaped Consulus’s purpose, mission, vision, services, and products across the company. Consulus also develops many instruments based on the value of unity to create a unified company culture and to solve any business challenges. These instruments are implemented to help their customers who are companies too. The findings of this research are compared with the survey by Breuer and Ludeke-Freund. Practical implications are also discussed in the conclusion.
