Russian Empire in Comparative Eurasian Perspective

Abstract

The paper’s focus is a structural comparison between Russian, Ottoman and Persian empires. I argue that Russia was a colonial empire in its Eurasian borderlands and was driven by a form of state colonialism that was both similar and different from traditional colonial experiences. I also examine the diffusion of ideas that criss-crossed the above empires, but were absorbed and adapted in different ways.
