New Age Indian Youth: Torn Between Tradition and Modernity

Abstract

What do we see in Indian youths today? High-spirit, passion, drive to prove oneself? Also what we see is the constant anxiety towards balancing between family values and tradition and the pull towards radical thinking and Western liberal ideals. Grown up watching and reading Western Eurocentric literature all our lives, most Indian youth have developed liberal and progressive ideas of how to live a life. But when it comes to the ground reality, what becomes a hurdle are the relatively conservative values that are averse to change that operates in the society. This paper focuses on the ideas of cosmopolitanism among the youth in India including a critique on how cosmopolitanism is often only superficial.
