Access to Food as a Human Right and the Effect of Globalisation on Turkey

Abstract

Access to food is a human right and it forms the essential foundation of the right to live. While production and consumption of food in Turkey and beyond had been practiced through traditional methods for centuries, due to the improvements in technology in the last century, both the patterns of consumption and production and the food itself have changed. This change has occurred because of developed countries. By using technology and science, these countries have been intervening in the processes of food production in many different ways. These countries have a visible tendency to spread worldwide and open ways to a standardize and unified types of food. Developing countries, however, have difficulties in resisting to this and have to change their legal regulations. In this paper, the direct exposure of food to the pressures of globalisation and its effects will be examined thoroughly in both social and legal dimensions.
