The Implication of Mohammed Arkoun's Ethics in Politics

Abstract

Arkoun is a Muslim scholar who experienced a life among two traditions since his childhood—Islam (Aljazair) and Wesern (France). These had great influence on his attempt at creating future Islamic study which aims to link many facets of both civilizations, whereas, at the same time, many other Muslim philosophers—with few exceptions—conflict the two instead. This research employs a philosophical approach by borrowing from Jacques Derrida’s, Muhammad Sa’id al-‘Asmawy, Paul Ricoeur and Anthony Giddens. Several methodologies include descriptive, historical, comparative and synthetical analysis. Data gathering is based on research covering both the writings of Mohammed Arkoun himself and other writings relevant to this study. Data gathering technique relies on documentation of primary or secondary sources. The review culminates in a written textual narration, in accord with data analysis and theories. Based on a philosophical-critical approach, a verifiable conclusion is drawn. In conclusion, the author also proposes an urgent appeal to formulate ushũl as-siyãsah al-mu’ãshirah with a touch of Theo-humanistic color through a concept of religious democracy - as a scientific contribution to contemporary political study in Indonesia.
