Abstract
The understanding of poverty has evolved over the last few decades. Its meaning has changed from a narrow focus on income/consumption to a wider focus on capabilities, participation, and empowerment/agency. This paper looks at the different discourses of international and national institutions and global academic/research communities and their contribution to this changing understanding in a globalised world. The paper also describes some of the impacts of these changing discourses on the practice of poverty alleviation as observed during intensive fieldwork in rural India.
