The Farm of the Possibles, La Hacienda de los Posibles: A Factory of Local Ecological, Social, Cultural, and Economic Alternatives for a Global Change

Abstract

This paper argues for the rehabilitation of an historic Jesuit heritage farm and the regeneration of its agricultural landscape located in the Darro Valley , which is a also a heritage landscape in the province of Granada. The project proposes solutions to climate change through energy self-sufficiency and local healthy diversified food production, respectful of nature through a keyline and permaculture design. The Hacienda de los Posibles is a space for collaborative learning and comprehensive training that offers residency training services of the productive activities of the farm to citizens, artists, entrepreneurs, researchers, students, and vulnerable collectives with the objective of achieving individual autonomy. The farm offers a healthy and respectful agricultural-livestock-forestry production of natural and artisanal food products to feed the most vulnerable and citizens in general. Located in the Darro Valley, between the municipalities of Beas de Granada, Huértor de Santillán, and Granada, the Hacienda de los Posibles is a center of integral education based on continuous learning of our relationship with nature, people, and oneself. The main objective is to promote collective self-sufficiency and individual autonomy at the level of nutrition, training, and living together. The Hacienda has 400 hectares of food forest, an innovative agricultural model inspired by permaculture adapted to climate change with agricultural, livestock, forestry, and healthy production that supplies the Hacienda, the public school network, hospitals, and residence for the elderly. Accompanied by a transdisciplinary team, the Hacienda de los Posibles offers comprehensive training services with temporary residency for vulnerable collectives such as people living with mental health problems, in social and professional reinsertion, workshops for citizenship, summer school for children and solitary stay for young people, residence for artists, creative retreat for entrepreneurs, and research and innovation center for researchers, inventors. The Hacienda de los Posibles establishes a collaborative learning relationship based on the internal and external needs of the same with the administrations, institutions, organizations, foundations. At the internal level, the governance system is created and renewed on a three-year-cycle basis and annual common reflection on the needs for the proper functioning of the farm, such as rules, norms, protocols, conventions, contracts, etc. The Hacienda de los Posibles is a reproducible project of the application of local micropolitics answering pressing issues of food security and quality, climate change and global neoliberal system crisis.
