Cultural Elements Altering the Perceptions of In-turn Silences across Co-cultures

Abstract

The value placed upon silence varies dramatically across the world because co-cultures interpret the meaning of silence differently. Paradoxically, silence –– the complete absence of sound –– is a major source of misunderstanding. This literature review recompiles cross-cultural investigations that explore perceptions of in-turn silence and speech across the world. This literature review also classifies cultural elements that, either combined or independently, may be affecting the perceptions of in-turn silence. This literature review will respond to the question, what causes people to interpret in-turn silence the way they do.
