The Challenges of Subjectivity in Collective Efforts for Human Rights: Recent Social Movements in Latin America

Abstract

Globalization has transformed activism and social movements in Latin America. In addition to increasing levels of socio-economic disparities and exclusion, globalization has also promoted forms of activism that have become more legalistic, more immediate, more diffused, and more personal and subjective. This new approach to advocacy poses important challenges to the promotion and sustainability of collective efforts for human rights. This paper will analyze these transformations and describe some experiences of resistance as well as forms of adaptation that have been successful in conciliating new forms of activism and collective rights demands.
