An International Order of Well-being: A New Paradigm for Global Studies?

Abstract

We consider necessary a fundamental conceptual reformulation in international relations and international political sociology about international well-being. Research on power and on international security have dominated the field of analysis in international relations, but have lost their centrality articulating concepts of the debate in the discipline. We think that in global studies, international politics cannot be thought only from inter-state conflict or based on an absolute identity of interests, but rather as a scenario with new actors involved in the debate and global policies of redistribution and recognition. We aspire to locate “International Wellbeing” as a new conceptualization and framework of global analysis in the face of the necessary emergence of a new world welfare order. This requires a disciplinary effort where positions that foster a paradigm shift in global international relations are considered. For them we analyze on the one hand the roots and manifestations of the discomfort of the global order at present, particularly the indicators of inequality and poverty, and we explore the concept of wellbeing from the economic, sociopolitical, and philosophical point of view comparing the point of view of authors from the “North” (Europe and the United States) and from the “South” (particularly Latin America and Africa), reaching some initial conclusions in this regard.
