Indian Diaspora in Africa

Abstract

The emergence of diaspora as a possible resource in different spheres has significantly expanded as a consequence of the enabling conditions provided by globalization resulting into international migration. Diaspora has emerged as an enabler of development. This period is also characterized, among other facets, with the availability of cheaper and faster means of communications, cheaper air travel, better connectivity, free movement of money, capital, and porous borders. All these have contributed to the increasing utilization and harnessing of diaspora as a resource, which was hitherto considered a fissiparous and a centrifugal force. The new focus on migration and the role of migrants in development is a reflection of a wider re-evaluation of the complex relationship between migration and development over the last decade. Out of the twenty five million people of Indian origin across the globe, there are three million of them in the African continent. The PIOs of Africa are remarkably successful not only in economic field but also in the social and political sphere. They are educated and actively participate in the public and political sphere barring a few. Despite the presence of Indians in Africa for several centuries and the adverse circumstances that they had to face, there are many Indians in various countries of Africa who have retained their culture, tradition, attire and also their Indian lifestyle. My presentation will primarily focus on the role, identity and contribution of Indian Diaspora in Africa.
