Islamic State Terrorist Group and Human Security Issues: An Indonesian Case

Abstract

Democratization process in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), or the Arab Spring, led to increased instability in the region. The establishment of Islamic State (IS) following the Arab Spring, threatened other regions and countries such as Indonesia. The security threat in Indonesia and other ASEAN countries are related to suicide bomb attacks by IS members. The threat affected human security, including economic, environmental, social, and other forms of harm to the overall livelihood and wellbeing of individuals. Recruitment process of new IS members using conventional and digital media is an example of the social threat. IS social media propaganda emphasizes on violence, human rights violations, and the use of children troops, had led to the ban of IS by the Indonesian government. Therefore, to combat IS the government needs to cooperate intensively with other stakeholders with concern to human security issues. Beside addressing the domestic community, cooperation should also be conducted with other states in the region and at an international level. This paper answers the question: “what human security issues are caused by IS in Indonesia?” Further questions will be related to the effectiveness of government’s conduct and cooperation to reduce human security threats.
