Future of Non-proliferation: Challenges Ahead?

Abstract

Since the backbone of the global non-proliferation regime, NPT, went into effect, key factors for strengthening of non-proliferation have not been changed; positive and negative assurances. However, consistency and credibility of these assurances have also been the subject of lively and contentious debates. Apart from pure theoretical questions, the two current cases of the Iranian and North Korean nuclear crises provide suitable atmosphere for raising new questions related to the future of non-proliferation both on a global and regional basis. This is because, on the one hand, the North Korean crisis proves how difficult it is to convince a NWS for non-proliferation after deterrence failed. Besides North Korean nuclear behaviour -using nuclear threat- on regular basis underlines usability of NWs as assertive and risky bargaining tool of status-quo. On the other hand, the fragile future of the Iranian Deal – not only because of unpredictable character of hedging state but also because of unpredictable character of political conjecture in the USA where with the Trump era an anti-deal atmosphere is starting to be felt more strongly.
