Extremism: The Dilemma of Confrontation and Deterrence

Abstract

Extremism is one of the most important challenges that face the international system. It contributes to creating an unstable security environment, which affects the whole international community. Today extremists have the ability to threat and surprise attack. The new techniques used by international extremists groups weaken the ability of the international community to adopt a clear strategy to overcome it. The strategy of overcoming extremism should be based on two factors, confrontation and deterrence. Today is a time of confrontation, because the extremism phenomenon has become a real threat on the ground and it should be confronted by using force. However, the other factor, which is deterrence, should be adopted to prevent extremism from being an active international player with ability for future threat. The united point of views, predilection of common interest rather than self interest by states would help to build a strong preventive policies and strategies in order to prevent appearance of that movement of extremist frameworks.
