Ageism: Unlocking Our Bias

Workshop Presentation
Shari Collins

Only 8% of organizations worldwide include Ageism as part of their DEI strategic plans. This session analyzes the data and financial costs of ageism in an engaging format. Also part of the session we include exercises on “coded language” and bias that are embedded in language and in our actions. Finally, we aim to leave the workshop by changing negative misconceptions about aging with immediate actionable items to take back to your workforce.

The Value and Importance of Communicating within and across Cultures with Clear, Respectful, and Intentional Dialogue

Workshop Presentation
Gillie Haynes

Our world has become more diverse and ever expansive. Conversations and neighborhoods are now an Internet search away, which invites a global experience of varied backgrounds, cultures and perspectives in a manner of minutes. When we are curious, receptive, open-minded, and welcoming, we become the beneficiaries of knowledge, exposure, and a wealth of experiences far beyond our own. We are all communicating, interacting and working with many people within and beyond our own communities and around the world. Not every experience has been the same, which means each person’s interpretation and reaction to a conversation may be different. It is important that we spend time learning and understanding those with whom we will interact. Building understanding of our cultural differences can build relationships. Dialogue will allow us to exchange and absorb this infinite abundance of wealth, yet we must recognize the importance of respecting each culture in every conversation. How do we ensure that we are consciously engaging in dialogue that is kind and respectful? I invite others to join me in exploring how clear, respectful communication can be achieved within and across cultures in our personal and professional lives.
