Abstract
In audiovisual narratives, encounters with difference - and the conflicts that result from them - are the basis of the drama, and what provokes the transformation and development of the characters. Just as in real life, how the characters engage with each other can result in the creation of polarised enemies, or in the building of new connections and collaboration. Based on communication theory about behaviours that draw positive transformation from encounters with diversity, this workshop explores how positive and prosocial transformation occurs through encounters with difference in an audiovisual sample, and what that could show us about how we experience these encounters in ordinary life. By reflecting on eight prosocial communication behaviours and how they are represented in the audiovisual format, we explore how allegory, metaphor, myth and analogy contribute a new reflective awareness about how positive transformation can be achieved from encounters with diversity. The exercise will provide insights on what communication behaviours favour positive transformation, as well as what creative outcomes can be achieved both individually and socially when we are open to encounters with difference.
