Retaining the Nuances of a Minority Language when Writing in English
Amber Duivenvoorden
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Where a minority culture has retained its own language, the writer who wants or needs to write in another language faces the challenge of conveying the full meaning of the nuances belonging to that minority culture. This study explores three main ways, by which the nuances of the Maltese language can be retained when writing short fiction in English, all involving code-switching. By code-switching I mean shifting from one language to another, depending on the social context. In this case, as a creative practitioner, I use examples of my own creative work to show how a realistic linguistic landscape that does not jeopardize a wider audience’s understanding of the text can be created. My argument points to the fact that although there are ways to retain the nuances of the Maltese language, there are many limitations in evincing specific facets of Maltese life in the English language, especially those relating to jokes, politics, or dialect and for this reason, the Maltese culture can never be fully represented in mainstream literature.

Advancing Your Cultural Intelligence
Stephen Brady
Workshop Presentation
Demographics are changing rapidly in communities across the globe. In order to increase organizational and individual effectiveness research shows there must be an increased ability to interact respectfully with diverse individuals (Early and Ang, 2003). Unlike previous generations, today’s educators and professionals at every level need skills to be more effective in how they work with diverse audiences. Cultural intelligence (CQ) is the term denoting one's capability to function effectively in situations characterized by cultural diversity. Organizational and individual effectiveness is increasingly dependent on people who can be effective and respectful in a variety of cultural situations. The good news is, CQ is not fixed; with experience, education, and some simple, but intentional goals and strategies; one can improve her or his CQ. In addition, one can enhance the quality of her or his interpersonal interactions in a wide range of social contexts. This interactive session is designed to provide attendees with practical information to immediately put into practice in order to help them increase their CQ. This session focuses on relationships, by offering attendees useful strategies and tools for effectively interacting with stakeholders such as, co-workers, clientele, committee members, and external partners. As we enter our second century, extension professionals who can effectively interact with diverse individuals will ensure the organization remains relevant, regardless of changes that may lie ahead.

Acculturation or Cultural Preservation?
Iria Asanaki
Focused Discussion
Dutch society is becoming more and more diverse. In this context of super-diversity, Greek parents have their place in multiple municipalities of the Netherlands, trying to adjust to the new circumstances by simultaneously preserving their culture and language for themselves and their children. Greek language schools play a significant role in this effort. This paper explores how both qualitative and quantitative evidence has been used to highlight the migrant families’ needs in the country of residence in terms of acculturation and cultural preservation through the eyes of expatriates and second-generation Greeks of the Netherlands.

The Effect of Work Ethic, Work Discipline, and Work from Home Motivation on Performance during the Pandemic
Shonal Rath
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The researcher conducted this study to know and analyze the effect of work ethic, work discipline, and work motivation to work from home on employee performance during the pandemic at PD Dharma Jaya, DKI Jakarta. The population of the study was 210 employees of PD Dharma Jaya, DKI Jakarta. The approach used was a quantitative analysis approach through data collection techniques using a questionnaire given to 68 respondents. The sampling method used was probability sampling with a simple random sampling technique. The analytical method used was multiple linear regression with the help of SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) software version 25.0. The results obtained from all the data tested show that the variables of work ethic, work discipline, and work motivation have a positive and significant effect on the performance of PD Dharma Jaya employees, either partially or simultaneously. In addition, from the test results of the correlation matrix between dimensions, it can be seen that between the work is trust dimension in the work ethic variable and the personal qualities dimension on the performance variable there is a strong correlation, then between the dimensions of effective time measurement in the work discipline variable and the initiative dimension on the performance variable, there is a strong correlation as well. Besides that, there is also a fairly strong relationship between the dimension of desire to excel on the work motivation variable and the initiative dimension on the dependent variable, namely performance.
