Featured Retaining the Nuances of a Minority Language when Writing in English: A Creative-critical Approach to How the Nuances of the Maltese Language Can Be Retained View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Amber Duivenvoorden

Where a minority culture has retained its own language, the writer who wants or needs to write in another language faces the challenge of conveying the full meaning of the nuances belonging to that minority culture. This study explores three main ways, by which the nuances of the Maltese language can be retained when writing short fiction in English, all involving code-switching. By code-switching I mean shifting from one language to another, depending on the social context. In this case, as a creative practitioner, I use examples of my own creative work to show how a realistic linguistic landscape that does not jeopardize a wider audience’s understanding of the text can be created. My argument points to the fact that although there are ways to retain the nuances of the Maltese language, there are many limitations in evincing specific facets of Maltese life in the English language, especially those relating to jokes, politics, or dialect and for this reason, the Maltese culture can never be fully represented in mainstream literature.

Empirical Measurement Managing Diversity in an Organization: Towards the Application of Data Engineering View Digital Media

In this study we explore the ever-present problem of achieving better results in the area of creating innovative and diverse human resources in an organisation through learning and inference from past actions. This approach represents the quantitative stream related to data engineering, which through the use of quantitative methods supports the decision-making process in the organisation and has a significant impact on its further development. It is therefore non-trivial to quantitatively model the relationship between the actions taken to build diverse teams in an organisation in key areas of organisational management. This is why we proposed five synthetic indicators, corresponding to particular areas of the 5P architecture. The presented approach allows visualising the realisation of the organisation's activities in individual areas of diversity management expressed through the author's 5P architecture. Taking into account these individual areas (P1-P5) subjected to analysis it is possible to assess the realisation of this process in the organisation in many dimensions (planning, implementation, monitoring) at the same time providing a comprehensive picture of the issue under consideration. The analyses confirm that the individual dimensions of diversity management architecture interact with each other and that the direction of this correlation is positive - the development of diversity management in different areas occurs in parallel, but nevertheless - as can be seen from the values of the correlation coefficients - at a different pace/range.

Innovative, Motivating, Purposeful, Anticipatory, Compassionate, and Transparent Methods in Diverse Environments: Cultivating Relationships View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Alex Kemphaus,  Ralph Kemphaus

As the University of Cincinnati (Ohio) campus and classrooms continue to become more diverse, we must enhance our impact on individuals. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and IMPACT are primary focuses in my educational journey. I have recently focused on these concepts, specifically in the classroom and in my doctoral studies in Educational and Community-Based Action Research (ECAR). I am consistently implementing methods of teaching and learning that are Innovative, Motivating, Purposeful, Anticipatory, Compassionate, and Transparent both in and out of the classroom. IMPACT methods are the foundation for the cultivation of authentic relationships with my students, peers, and colleagues. Cultivating relationships continues to be a powerful tool throughout all of my educational experiences as a teacher, student, and researcher. Having the opportunity to share my successes and experiences with an international teaching and learning community will benefit my educational practices and allow others to benefit. As our environments become more diverse, so must our practices and IMPACT methods will help accomplish the task.

Island Girl: Female Leadership in Island Based Firms

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Guido Rojer

Firm performance is heavily influenced by characteristics of leadership executives. The literature on top management teams has identified gender differences as determinant of firm strategy. Gender also plays a role in the process of adoption of technology which in turn influences performance. Female board members, tend to be associated with fewer takeover bids, and lower bidding premiums and are also related to stock market liquidity of firms. Females on board of family firms has positive impacts on their performance, compared to those with only male elements. Many of these studies, however, are based on untested assumptions on gender differences, particularly females. While female run businesses are less likely to induce the process of innovation, evidence suggests that it is not the presence of females that positively contribute to firm performance through promotion of innovative behaviors rather it is the gender culture that facilitates elevated levels of innovation in firms. Female executives are better at capturing productivity signals from other females in the organization and can thus revert firm costs when only males are tasked with executive duties. It appears that gender issues are constantly pitting genders add odds with each other rather than considering the complimentary roles they can play. As a consequence, scholars fail to acknowledge how the assumptions made towards, particularly women, may sway results. It is for this reason that investigating gender influence in businesses may benefit from a change of scenery, where gender issues may be pronounced in a different way, such as islands.
