Career Capital of Skilled Migrants - A Macro, Meso, Micro Framework: Unpacking Career Capital Within and Across Levels

Abstract

Careers are constantly unfolding in particular physical, temporal, psychological, and relational contexts. This paper considers the careers of skilled migrants/professional immigrants within such complex contexts. Strategies (at the national level), best practices (at the organizational level), and characteristics (at the individual level) are explored through the lens of intelligent career theory - the career capital framework of knowing who (social capital), knowing how (skills and competences) and knowing why (motivations) - in order to better understand the careers of skilled migrants in the host country. Existing publications on skilled migrants’ careers in the business and management field are reviewed in order to inform a more comprehensive framework of career capital across levels of analysis.
