Underrepresented: Barriers African American Women Face in Hospitality Career Advancement

Abstract

Fostering equality and prohibiting discrimination in the workplace is extremely important. The lack of women in top management in the hospitality industry is an ongoing issue, and the dearth of Black female executives is even more prevalent. This paper exploits research regarding the challenges and barriers women face despite constituting more than half of hospitality education students and occupying the majority of professional entry-level positions. The results of this analysis provide pathways for applicable companies not only to attract and advance more African American females but also to promote diversity and ultimately create a more comfortable environment for all employees.
