Seeing Black: How African American Employees and Patrons Are Perceived in Hospitality Spaces

Abstract

The primary purpose of this paper is to examine the experience of African Americans as employees and guests across various sectors of the modern hospitality industry. From hotels and lodgings to food and beverage, travel and tourism, recreation and leisure, and meetings and events, the literary analysis of several incidents from the last decade highlight the differential treatment Blacks receive relative to others. The goal is to interrogate the connection between Black racial identity and the popular perception of performance as employee and hospitality patron.
