Abstract
Based on a recently published book, Leading in a Diverse Environment, the workshop highlights why self-examination is the key to leading people from different backgrounds. Leaders must know themselves first and then learn how to relate to others to lead them in our global society. Drawing upon a vast array of knowledge and examples from personal experience and different organizational and cultural environments, Dr. Malangwasira walks readers through a step-by-step approach on how to become successful at leading others with different cultural and social backgrounds. Workshop participants will consider: 1) How knowing yourself helps you embrace diversity and successfully lead a diverse team, 2) The steps to take to create SMART goals, 3) The significance of a mentor on your leadership journey, 4) The essential steps for inspiring others, 5) How to attract and retain talent, 6) The importance of creating trust with your team, 7) Key steps to take in developing others, 8) The process of working together, and 9) Evaluating your progress as a leader. Diversity provides a bevy of opportunities for learning, growth, and development. As a leader, it is up to you to acknowledge people’s differences and celebrate their strengths. It is time to take the lead in celebrating and capitalizing upon diversity in your organization, community, and life.
