The Effect of Polygamous Homes on the Academic Performance of Junior Secondary Schools in Lagos State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study carries out an in-depth study on the effect of polygamous homes on the academic performance of junior secondary schools in Lagos State. It investigates the influence of parenting styles on the academic achievement of students and the effect of family size on the academic achievement of students. It also investigates the effect of parental socio-economic status on academic achievement of students in Lagos State. Major components of data collection procedures which include research design, population, sample size and sampling procedures, instrument, and validation,and administration of instrument and statistical procedures used for data analysis. With the use of questionnaire, a randomly selected 120 respondents comprises of teachers and students of different schools and locations were used for the study. The outcome of the findings shows that there is a magnanimous difference between the social life style of a child from polygamous home and that of monogamous home and that a child from a monogamous family performs academically better than that of a polygamous home. Also the child from a monogamous home life style has good conduct better that the child from a polygamous home. In light of these findings the study recommended among other things that whatever family background, status, or situation, there should be firmness, equity, care, love, attention, and balance among siblings.
