Retention and Attrition of Dual Language Teachers, 2012-2017

Abstract

This research examines the retention and attrition of a group of fourteen bilingual education pre-service teachers in a South Texas university, which serves an under-represented population. The study follows up on participants who began their academic journey to become bilingual certified teachers, earned their degree, and intended to pursue a professional career as bilingual teachers. The results of this five-year study showed that creating a long-term relationship with peers and mentors, the retention of bilingual teachers in the profession remained high and attrition remained low showing a contrast to both state and national trends
