Championing an Inclusive Classroom

Abstract

This discussion hopes to delve into the meaning of inclusive teaching, explore the different dimensions of student diversity, discover how diversity (or lack thereof) impact student learning outcomes and examine strategies to promote equity, inclusion, and accessibility in course design and assessment. We will engage in a robust conversation about the dimensions of student diversity (visible vs. invisible; structural vs. functional vs. interactive) and how one’s identity can influence the learning outcomes of diverse groups. This talk will uncover opportunities to promote equity, how to embrace challenging topics and discover why inclusive teaching matters to classroom climate, motivation, and disparities in persistence or performance. This focused discussion is for you if you seek to ensure that we respect and leverage diversity and champion inclusion in the classroom.
