Indigenous Knowledge Systems: Applying Creativity and Innovativeness for Economic Prosperity in Nigeria

Abstract

There is need to harmonise the indigenous education system with modern education in order to improve pedagogy and curriculum content in our modern education system to ensure economic prosperity. This study explores why an indigenous knowledge system is not popularly embraced among educationists in Nigeria. It examines perceptions of tertiary education students on the learning of indigenous education, explores how creativity and innovativeness can be used in indigenous education, discusses measures/strategies to be employed in order to encourage the use of indigenous knowledge in teaching and learning to attain socio-economic prosperity, examines the contents of indigenous education versus modern education system with a view to bringing about areas of similarities and differences, and evolves a model on an indigenous education system that can be adopted in teaching and learning. The research method to be employed will be quantitative and qualitative approaches. Also, an exploratory technique will be used in the study. Appropriate statistical tools will also be employed. Based on the findings of the study recommendations will be made.
