Trapped in the Short-run, but Dreaming of the Long-run? : The Amazon Forest and Commodities Production in Brazil

Abstract

The presentation outlines the goals and parts of a research project about the role the Amazon Forest could play in a Brazilian “build back better” strategy based on greener approaches as well as more social inclusive and innovative approaches. It shows the contemporary conflicts, challenges, and opportunities highlighted by academic literature. Also, the study presents an overview about Brazil’s economy focusing how the commodities production (soybean, cattle, corn and mining) became a threat not only to environment and livelihood, but to next generations wealth due to the potential of a green economy headed by Amazon’s nature endowment.
