Innovative Indigenous Ecological Knowledge Responses to Climate Change in Agriculture
Stephen Chitengi Sakapaji
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
For decades now, the implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation mechanisms and solutions in the agriculture sector have been embedded in scientific knowledge, sidelining indigenous ecological knowledge (IEK) (Belfer et al., 2017). However, it must be noted that these two knowledge bases have for a long time worked hand in hand, and have always benefited from each other. In this paper, I argue that IEK is as important as scientific knowledge in effectively addressing climate change impacts and thus, the integration of the two knowledge bases can be very beneficial in tackling the many challenges emanating from climate change. This paper explores and analyzes effective IEK practices for climate change adaptation and resilience-building in agriculture in Zambia. The goal is to identify which IEK practices are effective for climate change adaptation and resilience-building and can be integrated with scientific knowledge and replicated in similar regions for a more resilience agriculture sector for all. This paper focuses on analyzing Zambia’s agriculture traditional society which involves assessing and examining available literature, field observations and oral history from the local knowledge holders themselves on changes within the environment, past and present environmental catastrophes specifically those related to climate change and the traditionally adaptive mechanisms being utilized. The paper concludes that the integration of effective and innovative IEK practices with scientific knowledge and a possible replication as observed from this case study can be one of the most effective ways for a sustainable adaptive agriculture sector in the face of climate change.

The Climate Crisis Re-interpreted as the Apartheidocene
Samuel Grant
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recognizes that Africa will experience among the worst impacts of the climate crisis due to its lower adaptive capacity in world-ecology. Recognizing the climate crisis as essentially weaponized through structural violence, an examination of it through the lens of the Apartheidocene (Leguizamon Grant, forthcoming, 2021), makes it easier for us to both trace these dynamics and consider how to stop the violence. Whether we are looking at France, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Haiti, or other locations of Diaspora with large Africana populations, we recognize specific ways in which anti-black violence is orchestrated – both historically and contemporarily as a pattern in the climate crisis. Black lives have historically faced the inhospitable climate of racism expressed through colonialism, capitalism, imperialism, and hetero-patriarchy. We see all of these as manifestation of an ecologically imperialist form of world-ecological organization. By renaming the climate crisis as the Apartheidocene, we focus our examination on metabolic flows in world-ecology and the specific ways in which Black space and Black ecology as theorized by Nathan Hare (1970) is relevant in the context of the climate crisis. We propose options for action that eradicate the pattern of anti-black violence and move all of us along substantive just transition pathways by 2050 to exit the Apartheidocene and enter new world-ecological norm of ecological democracy by 2050.

Non-national Climate Action in the Age of State Inaction
Charlotte Hulme
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
While many states have absented themselves from playing a constructive role in addressing climate change, proving either unable to overcome domestic political gridlock or unwilling to place climate change ahead of other policy priorities, some of the world's most powerful companies now not only acknowledge it as a major business risk, but also are doing more to address it than is legally required. I present a theory of emergent consensus to explain how companies came to understand and treat the low-carbon future as inevitable, despite limited regulatory pressure and their uneven perceptions of the near-term risks and opportunities posed by climate change. Drawing on empirical evidence from the United States, Germany, and India, I consider the conditions under which non-national actors may come to address this kind of transnational risk in the absence of state action.

Raising Climate Change Consciousness
Susan Lago
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The humanities must equip learners to think critically about issues of climate change. Urban communities, in particular, face erosion of natural space as Earth’s climate changes and urban sprawl increases. This change demands that we encourage meaningful engagement with nature to prepare learners to develop innovative solutions to environmental challenges. From fall 2019 to fall 2021, the authors conducted a study that asked the question: To what extent does experiential learning within the framework of a nature-themed humanities writing course lead to an increased sense of responsibility for the human impact on natural environments in local urban communities? CUNY / Queensborough Community College is located in Queens, the most diverse borough in New York City, with students who hail from more than 140 countries and speak 84 languages. Queens also has a diversity of housing stock and geographical terrain: the beaches of Rockaway, the boating communities along Jamaica Bay, the suburbs of Douglaston, the dense urban sprawl of Flushing. The study focused on learning outcomes of writing classes that assigned humanities texts about nature (namely, Thoreau’s Walden and Into the Wild by Jon Krakaurer) in addition to embarking on a nature walk where the class collected information about their observations. Post-pandemic, individuals either went to their local park or utilized a live stream to experience nature. Students were surveyed at the beginning and end of the semester to ascertain the extent to which attitudes about nature, and human responsibility to preserve the environment, had shifted and students’ knowledge base increased.

Effects of Climate Change Adaption on Farmers’ Livelihood
Thi Dieu Linh Nguyen
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper examines the salted water intrusion (SWI) adoption in Central Coastal region of Vietnam. We evaluate the impact of SWI adaption options on farmer’s livelihoods, using cross-sectional survey data of 414 farmers in Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam province. Propensity-score-matching (PSM) techniques is applied to solve problem related to “self-selection into treatment”. The findings reveal a robust and significant impact of SWI adaption methods on economic indicators (crop productivity, net farm income) and social indicators (rate of kid going to school and food security). The results confirm that there is considerable heterogeneity in implementing SWI adaptation options of farmers in study area. We find that out of five adaption methods, four (vegetable, papyrus, shrimp and lotus-fish) are noted to have a quite significant income –enhancing, mainly thank to higher profits. Moreover, the household who apply these four methods have significantly higher rate of kid going to school (by 15%, 8%, 22% and 57% respectively) and ensure more food secure. Method of applying new varieties rice is recognized to have income- decreasing due to lower yield and insignificantly positive effect on social issues. The significant of results are tested by bootstrap to ensure robustness in our study.

Indigenous Climate Change Mitigation in the Antropocene
Hannah Machado Cepik
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In this study, I discuss some mitigations to climate change carried out by extra-modern communities and the ethical and theoretical implications of anthropology in this scenario. As Latour writes, dealing with Antropocene's consequences has demonstrated the need for the participation of extra-moderns (Viveiros de Castro, 2018) - peoples who never set out to be part of modernity but who were forced to adapt and finish the world they built - in research and decision-making. The insecurity of events creates the need to deal in some way with the unpredictable, and the agency of indigenous peoples is a way to understand in what ways one can deal with the world to come (Viveiros de Castro, 2018). In this communication, I demonstrate some examples of indigenous mitigations and anthropological research to discuss how this intersection is constructed in the discipline, seeking to weave possible paths in the face of new climatic events. Then, I discuss the place of anthropology and ethnology in studies on climate change, as well as if and how these researches are justified in a scenario of decoloniality, of questions on appropriation of knowledge and ethnographic authorship.
