Farakka Barrage, Temperature and Rainfall Effects on Drought Conditions, Vegetation and Teesta River Dryness in Kurigram District

Abstract

Rivers are important elements of the Earth surface which are playing ecological and economical roles in an agricultural dependent country like Bangladesh. Teesta River which runs through Kurigram, an agricultural economy based northern district of Bangladesh, is considered to have an effect on water volume as a result of “Farakka Barrage.” Drought condition in Kurigram district is changing as a result of low water volume in the river along with temperature and rainfall. In this study, it is aimed to find out drought effect on land and vegetation and river dryness over time using three parameters: SMI (Soil Moisture Index), NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and rainfall. Satellite data are collected through Remote sensing and processed and analyzed with EDRAS Imagine and GIS software to find out the desired parameters. The resultant SMI is used to identify drought condition and NDVI is for vegetation. Temperature and rainfall data are used to find out their relation with drought and river dryness of that area over the period of time
