Climate Change and Women of Bangladesh: A Legal and Social Perspective

Abstract

Bangladesh is the 6th most vulnerable country in the world as per Climate Risk Index for 1996–2015. It is frequently facing the climate related disasters like sea bed rise, salinity of land, cyclone etc. Women of Bangladesh are the most affected part of the society by any climate change resulted disasters. Despite of social stigmas and legal drawbacks, they are standing back not only to save and protect themselves but also their families. Being the most victimized portion of the society, they are also playing the significant role as the fighters against the climate change. They are now playing the leading role to change social and legal view towards them showing their contribution and participation to the society. The changing view of the society helping them to have a strong position in the social and legal arena of the country. As per a recent report, more than 19,100 women have built better systems of support and preparation for those aforesaid climate disasters in ten most climate change affected districts compared to livelihood skills training taken by the Government which only enabled more 1,600 women to expand their businesses. Besides, some NGOs like Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association whose chief is a women are working hard to have a separate legal stand for the climate change affected women. So for the utmost development of Bangladesh, the position of women due to climate change should be uplifted through the social and legal mechanism.
