Innovation in Adapting to the Impacts of Climate Change: Drone Technology, Online Reality and "Big Data" Analytics in Advancing Society's Response to Climate Change

Abstract

Canada is regarded to be at the forefront of climate change science globally. Contributing to this expertise is the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) Climate Lab that conducts research and science on climate change vulnerability, impacts, and adaptation. Recognized in Canada and around the world, the UPEI Climate Lab has firmly established its role as a collaborative research and services partner to address the pressing impacts of climate change on Prince Edward Island in a very timely and effective manner. The UPEI Climate Lab is regularly featured in national and international media for its innovative applications of new technologies such as drones, online reality and “big data” analytics to concerns with increasing sea level rise, coastal erosion and storm surges. The UPEI Climate Lab has rapidly established a reputation as an “authority” on climate change impacts and adaptation for Prince Edward Island and the Atlantic Region of Canada. This presentation will provide an overview of the impacts of climate change on Prince Edward Island, and how the innovative new technologies of drones, online reality and “big data” analytics are being used to advance the understanding of measures to adapt to climate change in Canada.
