Comprehensive Cooperation for Assessing the Urban Human Settlement Environment under Climate Change in China

Abstract

The pressures of climate change are contributing factors to the vulnerability of the socio-economic system in China. Changes in the concept of climate adaptation have made the linkage between assessment and the main components of the socio-economic system a priority for municipalities. We propose an interdisciplinary model that covers different scenarios and integrates the aspects of economic loss, ecological system, urban infrastructure and public health for a comprehensive assessment of urban environment vulnerability. The conceptual framework of climate adaptation strategies is proposed, and suggestions are provided along with relevant reviews and information that include the review of Chinese adaptation policy, risk and vulnerability assessments and an adaptation database. The model, inspired by the conceptual framework and in combination with the suggestions, highlights the significance of interdisciplinary cooperation. The results of the assessments are then transformed into feasible adaptation strategies for use in Chinese cities. In addition, by including other components in the evaluation of economic loss, the quality and comprehensive of vulnerability assessments can be greatly improved. The benefits of cooperation following this model can inspire decision makers, aid in solving complex issues and advance the theoretical understanding of the urban environment.
