Textbook Publication: Publisher versus Self

Abstract

The paper compares the benefits and limitations of textbook publication with a well-known publisher and self-publishing. The authors discuss their experience in publishing books through both pathways. Advance and Multivariate Statistical Methods is in its 7th edition with Routledge (Taylor & Francis) Publishers. It was initially published in 2001, when self-publishing was not an option. Baby Stats! An Introduction to Statistics in Social Sciences is a self-published textbook in its 2nd edition. Initially published in 2018, Baby Stats! was created when self-publishing had become an easily accessible reality. Authors consider the review and acceptance process, content and layout control, the use of digital tools, marketing, author investment and cost, sales, and revenue for the two books. The study provides guidance to prospective book authors.
