AI and Artistry: Balancing Creativity and Ethics in Image Publishing

Workshop Presentation
Dious Joseph

The workshop offers a thorough and engaging discussion of the complex ethical issues raised by the development of AI in image creation. It will begin with introducing the subject, effectively setting the stage through an engaging video and an icebreaker poll, and assessing participants' initial perceptions of AI in image creation. Central to the workshop will be five key thematic areas: intellectual property rights, representation and bias, impact on creative industries, transparency and accountability, and participatory culture and user-generated content. Each theme will be explored through mini-lectures, interactive presentations, and real-time audience engagement tools like Mentimeter. This multifaceted approach can provide theoretical insights and encourage active participation and reflection among attendees. A notable feature will be the scenario-based activity focused on ethical decision-making in AI image use. Participants will be divided into groups, each presented with different hypothetical scenarios involving using AI-generated images in publishing. This exercise will be pivotal in facilitating a deeper understanding of the ethical implications and encouraging participants to apply ethical considerations in practical, real-world contexts. The workshop will conclude with a summary of key learnings and a Q&A session, allowing participants to clarify doubts and express their viewpoints. Overall, the workshop's significance will lie in its balanced approach, blending theoretical knowledge with practical, interactive elements. It can successfully raise awareness about the ethical complexities of using AI-generated images, prompting a thoughtful discourse on the responsible and equitable use of AI in the publishing industry.
