The Librarian as a Therapist: A Case Study of Bibliotherapy Among Boys in a Juvenile Home in Lagos State, Nigeria

Abstract

This paper considers the role of librarians as therapist. The researchers visited and performed the role of therapist using bibliotherapy in a juvenile home for boys. This study seeks to draw an analogy between the professional roles of a librarian and a therapist. A qualitative approach was employed using bibliotherapy among young boys in Special Correctional Homes for Boys, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria. This was done through focus group discussion. Ignorance of law, parents neglect, youthful exuberance, and family finance were major factors responsible for the juveniles being in the correctional homes. “The Legends of the Regulators and The Secret List” by Brad Chapin were used during the session and the findings were analysed under three themes namely action, awareness, and challenges. The result of the study revealed that books can help in modifying non-conforming behaviours among young boys. The participants showed remorseful altitude at the end of the sessions. When bibliotherapy is used among young boys with non-conforming behaviors there can be positive modification.
