From Printed Book to E-Book : The Evolution of the Book Through New Communication Technologies

Abstract

Books are the most important and indispensable element of our intellectual life. Books on different fields such as science, art, literature, philosophy, history, journalism are part of our daily life. Sometimes it is a tool that gives us aesthetic pleasure; sometimes it allows us to store information; sometimes it is a tool that conveys information from generation to generation, from time to time, from place to place. A book is a collection of prints, made up of printed paper sheets. The history of civilization points out to a process in which the book has undergone certain formal changes throughout the years. Today, computer technology and internet mediated significant change of the book just as the discovery of paper and the invention of press did in the past. Nowadays, when you say “book”, hardly anyone thinks of just printed and bound objects. Nowadays, when you say “book”, people think of different e-book formats that are computerized, published, and put up on the internet, and shared easily. E-books which are transferred to digital environments come into being in different formats such as PDF, MOBI, EPUB, etc. In this work, we not only study the role of new communication tools throughout the journey from printed books to digital books but also analyze the innovations brought by the evolution that the book has undergone. Our analysis focuses on the role of new communication technologies in this evolution.
