New Information Searching Environment for Academic Libraries: Emerging Federated Search and Discovery Tools

Abstract

Advances in technology are transforming human civilization and e-society. New technologies have rebuilt the working environments of libraries to be more convenient and more connected. Information Communication technology (ICT) can provide direct or indirect improvements in the quality of services being provided to users. Emerging technologies through libraries and information centers aim to bring new opportunities and better services to academics and students. In this e-society, libraries find themselves challenged to provide a simple and single platform that allows users to search all library resources from a single point. A discovery tool provides a single point of access to a range of library resources that enables users to search multiple resources with a single search. Some examples include EBSCO Discovery Service Summon and AquaBrowser Library. Discovery tools provide a more intuitive search interface that encourages discovery and promotes the library as a quality research source that meets the changing expectations of users. This paper defines web scale discovery and highlights importance of discovery tools being used by the libraries. It also considers technology limitations and some of disadvantages of discovery tools.
