Make Your Research Paper into a Graphic Novel!: Present Your Research in a Different Way

Abstract

Without drawing experience, or sophisticated software knowledge, the participants will learn new strategies to present their work in a digital format as opposed to the traditional textbook. Such strategies include: using creative writing, doing storyboards, looking for copyrighted-free images on the Web, and working with free photograph and graphic novel applications. The participants will help create a graphic novel page by following a step-by-step guide projected on a PowerPoint presentation, which through discussions, the author will modify with participants’ ideas and suggestions. The session consists of three sections. In this section (Adapting Academic Research into a Graphic Novel), the participants will learn how a fictional character can be used to tell the reader their academic findings. Examples taken from the graphic novel “The Museum of American Cancelled Television Shows: Manhattan and Public Memory” will be used to show the utilization of characters, creative writing, and content. In this section (Storyboards and Halftone 2 Application.), the participants will learn how to place their text and visual content in storyboards with the use of a graphic novel application called Halftone 2.During this section, participants can discuss their own ideas to fill-in the storyboards. In this section (Images and Photoshop Mix), the participants will learn how to find copyrighted-free images on the website Pixabay.com and edited them on the application Photoshop Mix. During this section, participants can discuss their choices of images and effects they would like to see on their projects. The workshop session will end with a finished graphic novel page.
