Depiction of Society Through Space: City of Bliss (Anandi آنندی) by Ghulam Abbas

Abstract

Anandi, a story beautifully knitted by Ghulam Abbas highlighted the social logic of space in a manner that it not only focuses the standards of society but relating architecture and use of space as an important component in society. Abbas beautifully and tactfully emphasized the logic of space. How a group of prostitutes forced out of a city to a distant barren locality because their presence was considered to be polluting the town. After a few years, because of those women the locality become a flourished and a well-developed town. They were asked again to vacate the town. They were unable to understand the basic logic of space that the progress and settlement of market was because of them. The settlement was flourishing as they were the hub. People from far-flung areas, especially the rich and elite lot used to visit their houses. Space and place have always been important when it comes to developing and maintaining self-identity or group-identity of people. The idea behind the selection of this story is that “The architectural forms depicted in a story narrate the psychological, behavioural and financial standing of a society or a part of it at a specific time and how people use architecture as a symbol.” Moreover, this story is a clear depiction that how a space is associated with a specific task or community and its effect on society.
