The Role of Art in Humanizing Marginalized Populations : Art for Human Rights

Abstract

The purpose of this focused discussion is to discuss the role that art plays in humanizing marginalized populations that are often dehumanized by society. Art is able to communicate in ways that words often can’t and has been used to enact social change thorough history to empower and humanize people in a significant way. Examples of the presenter’s work in using art to combat ageism and homophobia among college students are presented. These examples will be used as a means to invite discussion on how various forms of visual arts can be used in participants’ communities to enact positive social change and help humanize marginalized populations in their respective communities. The implications of art for social justice are also considered.
