Your Own Art and the Narratives that Flow From It

Abstract

A piece of art can contain a myriad of stories. Of course the story embedded in it during its creation by the person who created it. And then there are the stories that surface for those who view it. This workshop will offer participants the opportunity to create an image of something that represents a relative or ancestor. Perhaps something like a grandmother’s gardening tool, or an image of a father’s favorite cap. After the images are created, we will each write down the story of the significance of our image, including the layers of cultural and familial meanings we attach to it. Then, in pairs or triads, participants will share their images and narratives. And perhaps also share what stories are created when we see the other participants’ images. When I see someone else’s image of a teacup, do I think of the story about my great-grandmother bringing a few special possessions with her from Norway? And how is her history held by my family’s memories and stories? When we return to the large group we will share what the experience felt like and how our images can bring to life important histories of people, places, beliefs and values. As an art therapist, I love the combination of Narrative Therapy and Art Therapy and I will encourage participants to hold both the art and the history flowing from it, as treasures.
