The Hand Pan: A Hybrid Music Instrument

Abstract

The hand pan is a relatively recent innovation in music instruments. It is a cross between the steel pan (steel drum) from Trinidad and two claypot drums: Ghatam from South India and the Udu from Nigeria. A unique aspect of the hand pan is that it is designed to play pitched notes and melodies using only hands. Hence, it is a remarkable innovation. The presenter will introduce the hand pan by providing a background on its development and by demonstrating its various aspects, followed by a performance.
