The Role of Music in Conflicting Societies

Abstract

During previous conflicts around the world it has been identified that Art and music have always been at the forefront of military motivation and building support from the general public. Since the 2011 Libyan revolution Libyans have been in conflict and this has resulted in an explosion of artistic expression through the different art forms. Some people see this as having a positive impact on a society with many differences and others see this new expression of the arts as having a destructive impact on society. The study is tried to find out the role that music has had during the Libyan civil war from 2011 until March 2018. This is with the aim of looking at the changes that Libyan music has gone through this period and the effects that it has had on the Libyan society whether it is a tool of unity or division? An analysis of the role that the arts took in Libya leads to a specific focus on music in Libya and what role it is having in the current conflict. Consequently to support the theory that there is a role for the arts and in particular music in conflict, although the role is not always positive and does have a negative impact and also raises new issues for the Libyan society to work on, i.e. identity.
