Patriotism in the Painting of Colonial India

Abstract

During colonial period (1900 to 1947) a new trend of paintings emerged in India. Raja Ravi Verma, Abanindranath Tagore and members of his Bengal School of art were important artist of this phase. Meanwhile a new movement of many publications of the paintings such as Modern Review, Roop-Lekha, Marg and Bharati etc. come into sight prominently. As the paintings published in these journals were based on patriotism various art historians had written about contemporary scenario in which country was suffering for political freedom and self existence. Through this new trend common public got the opportunity to be aware of the revolutionary transformation in Indian art and society. The paintings made on patriotism and the writings the art historians as well contributed a lot to unite Indians who were following different religion, living in different parts of the country and getting influenced by the westernization. The art historian and artists also played a vital role to accumulate and promote Indianess. Thus in this article it is attempted to present a study on the contribution of painters and Indian art historians who played a significant role to spread feeling of Nationalism during colonial period in India.
