Theatre between Tradition and Contemporaneity: Alarinjo and the Film Industry in Nigeria

Abstract

There has always existed a correlation between tradition and Contemporaneity not only in theatre world but also in other dynamic human activities. This is because the human existence usually draws strength from the past as a catalyst for moving to the present serving as the wheel for propelling into the future. In line with the altruism and in conforming to the main theme of the International Conference, this paper critically examines the correlation between the Alarinjo Theatre and the film industry in Nigeria. In the process, the paper traces the various developmental stages which subsisted between the aforementioned trends of theatre development in Nigeria society. The paper finally offers some useful suggestions on how best to make use of theatre between the two worlds of tradition and contemporary.
